The first hour of Sidney Lumet’s Dog Day Afternoon does not seem like a queer film. There’s certainly political subtext there, but nothing queer, at least nothing overtly so.
Dog Day Afternoon is frequently called one of the greatest American movies of the 1970s — in fact, the AFI named it among the 100 best thrillers of all time in 2005. It’s tense, unexpected, funny, sad, and deeply, deeply human.

So we can think that the events represented in the film may happen to any of us, because life is unpredictable. If we think of the title, Dog Day Afternoon, afternoon is something that also happens every day. Once again we are led to believe that the story was true because of repetitive images of things that often happen and we are accustomed to.

Of course, any fan of the movie should find it enjoyable. It’s a great tale of a bank heist gone epically wrong, and the characters–although not the brightest–are convincing and likable enough to gain sympathy from the reader.
