Målrettet genmodifisering i mus startet en ny æra innen molekylærmedisin og basal molekylærbiologi. De siste 20 årene er metoden videreutviklet til å kunne endre spesifikke gener i gitte organer ved et ønsket tidspunkt. I dag er mer enn 10 000 gener modifisert ved denne metoden.
